The NFL season has begun; meaning millions of viewers will be watching football every Sunday for the next several months. While viewers generally tune in to watch their favorite teams and players, viewers may be tuning in for other reasons this season. One notable player on a very historic franchise has decided to take a stance regarding his opinion of the oppression and injustice that minorities have suffered in America.
Colin Kaepernick, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, is refusing to stand for the national anthem as it is ceremoniously played before every single NFL game – preseason and season games alike.
Due to the nature of this protest, Kaepernick has received a lot of media attention with people taking various positions against or in support of Colin’s actions. Even President Barack Obama has voiced his opinion by stating that Colin Kaepernick’s actions are well within his constitutional right to protest in this manner.
Kaepernick started the protest by remaining seated on the team bench during the national anthem before a NFL preseason game. He has since moved to going to one knee while the rest of the team personnel are standing.
He is refusing to stand during the pre-game national anthem as a form of protest against the oppression and injustice of minorities in America, as well as police brutality. He has also stated that he will donate $1 million to various causes as part of his protest.
