Fitness: Made Simple

The second part of the equation that is living a healthy lifestyle is becoming more active. Being more active doesn’t mean you have to start running marathons. There are plenty of ways that you can increase your activity level and become a more active person without adjusting your entire social life to taking place on the treadmill.

1. Walk Everywhere

If you can, then do. This is a simple mantra to live by and it is especially true in regards to physical fitness. Your activity level can grow exponentially by simply increasing the amount of time you spend walking. Need to talk to a co-worker? Try walking to their desk instead of sending an email. Out of something and need to run to the store? If you aren’t close enough to walk all the way there, at least park in the back of the parking lot and get some extra steps along your way.

2. Nighttime Stretching

Another great way to increase your activity level is to get into the habit of doing some basic stretching or even yoga at the end of the day. Before you call it quits for the night, take 10 or 20 minutes and stretch out all of the kinks and aches from the day.

3. Find Active Hobbies

Sometimes getting active is easiest when you are distracting yourself from the exercise component of it. This is why it is such a great idea to get an active hobby. If you don’t like walking on your own too much, then try golfing. Chances are in the space of an afternoon on the green you’ll still walk miles, but you won’t feel like you are working out. This is a great way to ease yourself into working out more often.

4. Get a Pedometer

Counting your steps can help you become more active by inspiring you to move more. You can either purchase a standard pedometer to keep in your pocket as you go about your business, or you can even get a pedometer on your smart phone. Put it on when you get up in the morning and let it count your steps until you call it a night. Make a goal of reaching 10,000 steps every day. If you are reaching that without a challenge, increase it by 2000 steps until you feel yourself striving to be more active.

5. Take Advantage of the Experts

When you are just getting started with a fitness routine, it can be stressful. Take advantage of the experts that you have as resources surrounding you. Most gyms offer classes that can help you get in shape while following the instructions of the teacher. You can also work with a personal trainer to ensure that you are working out the right muscle groups and are building your personal fitness level without increasing your risk of injury.

Move More: Eat Less

Perhaps the best piece of advice that you can take when you are trying to improve your personal health is this simple mantra: eat less and move more. This is the trick to managing a healthy weight, reducing your risk of chronic disease and living an overall healthy lifestyle. So when opportunities present themselves to have a healthy snack or become more active, jump on them. Improving your health is one of the best things you can do for your mind and body.
