Student Raises $20,000 For Homeless Man Who Gave Her $5 To Get Home

Has your faith in humanity been waning lately? Well, it’s about to be restored. A student from Preston, in Lancashire, England, has managed to raise the equivalent of $20,000 for a homeless man who offered to help her get home after losing her bank card on a night out.

Dominique Harrison-Bentzen, 22, was touched by the homeless man’s gesture but did not take him up on the offer of his last $5 for a taxi. She was so touched that she decided to spend 24 hours on the street to raise money so that the homeless man – known only as Robbie – could afford a deposit for an apartment.

In an interview with UK newspaper, The Mirror, Harrison-Bentzen said that Robbie “has been homeless for seven months through no fault of his own and he can’t get work due to having no address.”

“And I simply can’t just give him the money, I have to go through the right channels. So I will be spending 24 hours through the day and night as a homeless person to understand the difficulties they face each day.”

Harrison-Bentzen ended up getting a huge amount of support and was even mentioned in a tweet by Stone Roses front man Ian Brown.

The University of Lancashire student ended up raising a lot more than she initially anticipated – plenty of money for an apartment deposit for the homeless man who is known for his acts of kindness in the area. Just in time for Christmas!
