Thomas Manning is the one and only man in the US to be given a penis transplant.
He spoke about his plans to go back to an ordinary life after being discharged from the medical facility. The 64-year-old Manning got the penis from a dead donor and had it attached to him by a group of surgeons at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital. The donor penis was replacing a stump of one inch that remained on Thomas body after most of his penis was eradicated to avoid an unusual cancerous growth from increasing.
“I want to go back to being who I was,” Thomas said in an interview. He decided to go public about the transplant so as other men out there with similar problems can gain hope. Manning alleged that it was not easy yet taking a glance at the donor penis, but the medical specialist is confident that he can urinate ordinarily in a few weeks’ time and revive his sexual activities within no time.
Before the transplant, Thomas told a local newspaper that it was hard thinking of relationships. “I could not have a relationship with anybody,” Manning said. “You can’t tell a woman, “I had a penis amputation.”
The surgeons had taken three years just preparing for the surgical procedure. They practiced on corpses to learn more about the sophisticated structure of the penis and carried out experimental surgery on about six corpse donors. Thomas, on the other hand, was instructed to undergo mental screening to make sure he was ready to go with the operation.
His donor had the same skin color and the correct blood group and luckily, he only had to wait for two weeks on the waiting list to get the organ. Curtis Cetrulo, the surgeon who led the group, said he was “cautiously optimistic” about the multi-thousand dollar surgery, but also said it was “uncharted waters” for the institution.
The operation was carried out as a program that its objectives are to rebuild law enforcers and such like personnel who put up with severe pelvic damages in war. Penis transplant is very experimental. There is a case of one patient living in South Africa, who is living well with a transplanted penis.
Nevertheless, four more hospitals in the country are legally allowed with United Network for donating Organs, which directs the country’s transplant scheme, to carry the complicated operation. More recently, we have transplanted faces, hands, uteruses and now, a penis. In China, medical specialist and scientists are trying with head transplants.
The state of having your penis eradicated, whether from accidental or injuries from violence or war, cancer is emotionally distressing, affecting intimacy, urination and also the capability to reproduce a child. Many such like people suffer in isolation due to the humiliation their injuries sometimes bring.
Penis transplants have created extreme interest among patients from Afghanistan and Iraq, but they will need an operation that is more extensive since their injuries, frequently from bombs laid around roadways, incline to be highly extensive, with a critical injury to nerves, blood vessels, and genital soft tissue, which also require repair.
The Defense Department’s Distress archive has recorded 1,367 men service members are still living with sustained genitourinary damages between 2001 and 2013. It is not said how many of these victims lost a part or the whole of the reproductive organ.
In 2005, a penis transplant was performed on a patient in China, but he later went back to the hospital after two weeks’ time to have the new organ removed. He claimed he was having mental problems with his wife. In December 2014, the man from South Africa we had mentioned earlier, aged 21 years old had his penis removed because of problems from circumcision in his teenage years.
He is said to be healthy, has usual sexuality, and furthermore conceived. For genetic irregularities or transgender operation, doctors will fashion the shape of a penis out of a patient’s skin, using embeds to create a successful erection. Transplanting an active penis needs joining tiny nerves and blood vessels.
The biggest challenge is not the operation itself but getting a donor organ. Many people do not feel inclined to donate. Van der Merwe mentions, “There are enormous mental issues about donating your relative’s penis.” Currently, there is one patient on the waiting list for a getting a penis from a donor in the US.
Due to the impact and importance of the surgery, it is imperative that more doctors carry out the procedure. It will go a long way in improving the lives of people, especially those who lose their penis due to a myriad of reasons.
