It has happened again.
Just two months after the horrific shooting at Umpqua Community College, Oregon, another spray of bullets claimed at least 14 victims in a shooting Dec. 2, in San Bernardino, California.
Two suspects reportedly carried thousands of rounds of ammunition to a center for people with disabilities where a holiday work party was taking place, according to local police chief, Jarrod Burguan.
The suspects were a married couple named Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27. They fired multiple rounds before engaging in a shootout with police.
Malik shot at the police from a moving vehicle while Farook was driving, according to the authorities. They then were later shot dead by the police
The couple even had pipe bombs, more ammunition, and bomb-making materials, the police said.
The police are now trying to contact Malik’s family and have said that Farook’s family is cooperating. But officials say that it’s too early to suggest a motive for the shooting.
President Obama has said that there’s a possibility the shooting could be terrorism-related, but that authorities still don’t know for sure.
Whatever the motive to do something like this, it just goes to show that in a country where there are more mass shootings that occur than days of the year, a need for gun control is so strong that the rest of the world is left completely dumbfounded.
How many lives have to be lost like this for something to actually be done about it? Only time will tell, but until something does, there’s no doubt that people living in the United States are starting to feel that much more unsafe simply leaving their houses.
