So … Ruby Rose. Yes, the name has certainly caused quite a media stir recently. The Australian actress, model and sometimes DJ seems to be everywhere, most notably for her role as the sexy Stella Carlin in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. But what exactly is it about the star and TV character that’s driven so many people loony, aside of course from her undeniably striking features? Perhaps it’s because we’ve entered into a time where gender and sexuality and things that seemingly confine humans to one or the other are becoming increasingly more blurred and complex, yet also controversial, than ever before.
Of course, one example is the debut of Caitlyn Jenner, former Olympian Bruce Jenner, who recently came out as a transgender woman on ABC News and revealed her new identity on the cover of Vanity Fair. But why bring up sexuality and gender when it comes to Ruby Rose? And why is it causing a bit of controversy? One, the star calls herself “gender fluid.” She made quite an alluring video where a dolled-up long blonde-haired Rose cuts off all her hair, sheds her feminine clothes and puts on a suit jacket and pants, making her appearance much more masculine. Her message is quite strong.
She told Elle magazine that she doesn’t identify as any gender. “I’m not a guy; I don’t really feel like a woman, but obviously I was born one. So, I’m somewhere in the middle, which – in my perfect imagination – is like having the best of both sexes,” she told Elle. She’s also engaged to a woman, Phoebe Dahl, and the two want to start a clothing range called Scallywags that’s “a gender fluid, gender neutral brand,” said Rose. She has also been public about her support for Caitlyn Jenner, and her co-star Laverne Cox, who’s also transgender. But this is not what the controversy is about. The controversy lies in a ton of straight women all over the internet saying that Rose is “turning them gay” and they’d “turn lesbian” for her. But, actual queer women aren’t taking that too lightly and are lashing back, saying that’s not really possible. Bottom line: Ruby Rose is an open, cool human being who also happens to be extremely attractive. You also can’t just turn gay or straight because of one person’s attractiveness. The end.
